The small hamlet of Turkdean is situated between Northleach and Bourton-on-the-Water in the beautiful Cotswolds.

The Norman knight Robert d’Oilgi is usually credited with responsibility for the building of Turkdean’s church, originally dedicated to St. Mary but much later (circa 18th century) rededicated to All Saints.

However, the oldest standing fabric of the church is probably the West end of the nave which it is estimated to date from the early 12th century and the time at which Ralph Basset, a “justiciar” held the Turkdean manor and gave the church (together with the church at Little Rissington) to his son, another Ralph Basset.

Signs of the original 11th century building and most of the remnants of Norman work were built back in to the walls of the church at the time that the nave was rebuilt in the late 15th or early 16th centuries, when a new South aisle was constructed and the tower was added.

Today, this beautiful church continues to provide a warm welcome to visitors and worshippers alike.

All Saints Turkdean celebrates a traditional BCP Matins service with Holy Communion on the second Sunday of every month.

 

Services

The church also hosts special services throughout the year; celebrating Christmas with a candlelit service of readings and carols and, in keeping with our surroundings, our October Matins is celebrated as a Harvest Thanksgiving.  In addition, in some years we celebrate a Floral Choral Evensong in July which is an opportunity for visitors from all over our benefice to come together with some impressive floral displays in the Church.
