ST OSWALD, COMPTON ABDALE

Compton Abdale is a picturesque village situated in a valley below the Cheltenham-Northleach road.

The Church of St Oswald dates from the early 1400s and can be reached via a steep footpath.

​

It is believed that in pre-Roman times there was a pagan temple located on the site of where St Oswald’s stands today. This was followed by Roman occupation and later a wooden chapel.

The first record of the building dates to 1291. Like most of the churches in the benefice. St Oswald was restored in the late 1800s (in St Oswald’s case, 1881-83)

The church boasts a perpendicular tower with curious pinnacles, having on each angle an animal on its hind legs (probably wolves).
